I love Denise. She made me feel that I mattered and was cared for. She was a weekly refresher for me to vent and even questioned me to make me think. She was an excellent match for me.”  A.B., Pheonix, AZ

Understanding Anxiety and Depression

Everyone experiences feelings of anxiety from time to time: that feeling of dread before making a big presentation, the tension from a disagreement with a friend or even the butterflies in your stomach before a first date.

Anxiety can sometimes actually help you perform in stressful situations. When anxious feelings are persistent and begin to disrupt your daily life, however, you could be experiencing an anxiety disorder.

A person with an anxiety disorder may experience the following emotional symptoms:

  • Dread

  • Panic

  • Uncontrollable worry

  • Irrational fear

  • Irritability or restlessness

  • Erratic decision-making

The following physical symptoms may be present in a person with an anxiety disorder:

  • Racing heart

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Easily fatigued

  • Lack of focus

  • Muscle tension

Sadness is a normal human reaction to unpleasant life events, from bad news and break-ups to the loss of a loved one. And it’s perfectly ok to cry, grieve and feel down. When feelings of sadness are prolonged and overcome your ability to enjoy life, you could be experiencing depression.

The following emotional symptoms may occur with a diagnosis of depression:

  • Persistent sadness

  • Loss of interest in activities

  • Anger or irritability

  • Hopelessness or worthlessness

  • Thoughts of death or suicide

  • Suicide attempts

A person with depression may experience the following physical symptoms:

  • Difficulty sleeping and/or chronic fatigue

  • Decreased energy

  • Trouble concentrating

  • Changes in weight or appetite

  • Unexplained physical pain

“Hope is being able to see there is light despite all of the darkness.”
