Understanding Grief

Grief is a human response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering felt when someone or something you loveis taken away. Events such as the death of a parent or child, a miscarriage, a divorce or a devastating medical diagnosis can trigger grief.

Regardless of the type of loss experienced, everyone grieves differently. Though there are recognized

stages in the grieving process, not everyone will pass through each stage - and not everyone has to, in order to heal.

A person experiencing grief may experience

the following emotional symptoms:

  • Shock and disbelief

  • Sadness

  • Fear

  • Anger

  • Guilt

  • A sense of confusion

A person experiencing grief may experience

the following physical symptoms:

  • Fatigue and/or insomnia

  • Nausea

  • Aches and pains

  • Headaches

  • Weight loss or gain

  • Compromised immunity

“Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves, ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm and sometimes, it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.” Vicki Harrison
